The Sore Legs

Sunday February 26th 2017

9.15am start

A 50 miles cycle ride that must be completed within 4 hrs 30 mins.

The total height climbed is 771m (2529ft)

This is the traditional shorter reliability trial that we have run for many years but is still a considerable challenge.

The ride leaves the HQ on the northern edge of Leicester and within a few miles you are in the lanes. The route is soon into some short but sharp hills (enjoy the climb up through South Croxton!) before you tackle the long climb to Burrough on the Hill and the Hill Fort that gives the ride its name. A few more rolling bits of road, past a tea room in Gates Garden Centre (rather expensive, so not recommended, but it’s there if you need it) and you will then enjoy a long, fast descent to enter Rutland, England’s smallest county. A fairly flat section then follows as you head towards the crossroads at Ashwell, the furthest point on this route. You then turn left and pass a small cafe before heading north for 5 miles to the (better) optional cafe at the windmill in Wymondham. The next few miles after the café are easy, which is just as well because the climbing starts again as you go over hilly ground again on your way back to the HQ and a cuppa.

The same route sheet is issued for both the Sore Legs (50mls) and Leg Breaker (65mls) until Ashwell, so you should make sure you do not inadvertently follow the longer route by blindly following someone who may be doing the longer ride! Take care to read the route sheet and you will have no problem.

This is in large print and can be folded to A6 size for ease of reading on the bike. See sketch on the Crippler page.     Copies will also be available at the HQ.

You are advised to print out a copy of this map and take it with you unless you are familiar with the area.
